After making our way down highway 299 with all the road work, we stopped at the Rolling Hills Casino in Corning and met Dick and Joyce for lunch at the buffet. After a nice visit of amost 3 hours, we hurried and made it to Woodland for Mass at 5 p.m. Then we started for home. Got here about 7:30 or so and unpacked the car and looked at 10 tons of mail. It's good to be home, but we had a spectacular vacation, created many memories and spent quality time together. It was fun.

Dad and I stopped on the way across 299 in a rest area to play dominoes and this little fellow landed in a tree above us. He was so pretty...blue with a black head and tail, top notch on his head and a beak that was at least 1 inch long. I thought he might be a woodpecker. He stayed for about 20 minutes until 2 crows came and scared him away. We are in a motel in Weaverville this evening after a Roundtable salad and wings for dinner.

These beautiful creatures were not where they belonged in the Elk viewing area, but in the yard of a nearby motel. They were not in the least disturbed by us looking at them.

This little fellow was so cute. He sat there for the longest time and squawked at us.

Amanda is one too. After we had a fish dinner at the boat harbor, we came back to Reedsport and went to the Elk Reserve. Here is a sampling of what we saw up close. They were magnificent. About 40 all together, but 12 were up close. Then back to Virginia's trailer to see about getting on face book and farm game. Nighty night. WLY all. e and s, m and d, gma, gpa, ggma, ggpa.

Wednesday August 5, 2009

This morning we went over to visit Virginia and Amanda, then went out for a ride around the bay and saw the sights and then to lunch and had pizza and salad. Then Amanda and I went and got our hair done while Ed and Virginia shopped for goodies for tonight's fish taco banquet. We are now back at the motel watching "12 Angry Men", an oldie. We didn't take any pictures today. Tomorrow we re going to Cape Arago, a bit south of here.

Later on in the afternoon we stopped at a roadside rest to go to the potty. The place was really lovely and there was nobody around but us. So after we chased away all the bears, deer, antelope, buffalo, elk, moose, caribou, and snakes we sat down and played dominoes and Farkel for a while. Here are the pictures of the place.

There are three vultures in this photo and they took off quickly when a hawk arrived.

These things are treacherous looking....prickles all up and down their stems.

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

This morning we stopped at a game reserve to look at the native birds. There is a great blue heron in this picture......ooops, there he goes.

Did you ever wonder why your sewer pipes get plugged up with tree roots...here's a sample.

Some of the kids in that park playing with the shaving cream covered volleyball.

Dad stepping out to look over the sights down below, probably 3000+ feet! Yikes!!

Another lake, can't remember the name. On the way back down toward Cougar.

This is the west end of Spirit Lake..the gray is ash and logs.

This is such a pretty berry bush.

Spirit lake on the east end.

Monday August 3, 2009

This is on a dirt and gravel road that was labeled a wild life viewing area. It was a dumps where people had been target practicing as there were spent 22 shells all over the ground. We left quickly.

This is the road up Mount Saint Helens.

Monday August 3, 2009

This morning after a great breakfast at the motel in Morton, we headed toward the east and into the Pinchot National Forest. We took a wrong turn and ended up on Mount Saint Helens once again...this time from the north east. The last time was from the west toward the Johnson Observatory. This time we ended up at the windy peaks and stopped at a visitor center on the way up.. The views of the mountain at that angle are spectacular and the wild flowers are magnificent. We saw Spirit Lake for the first time: it is filled on one end with ash and tree trunks, but the other end is blue and beautiful. Scientists are tracking it to see how it is coming back to life after 29 years. We took lots of pictures....here I made a bouquet for you all from pine cones and wild flowers. When I was a little girl I used to go out into the farm fields and pick the wild flowers and bring my mommy a bouquet. So here's one for you all. After we got through looking we headed toward the town of Cougar and stopped at a park and played dominoes and Farkel. There was a group of ~30 high school kids and camp counselors there playing games. We had as much fun watching them as they had playing. One game was volleyball, playing with balls covered in shaving cream. That was sight to behold! It just flew in every direction. The next game they played, they had to choose three teams that were labeled "intelligence", "personality" and "Strength". Once they got their teams of 10 each, they lined up and the counselors took a seat in a camp chair about thirty feet away on the grass. One kid with envelopes with directions in each one, handed the envelope to the first kids, one at a time, to race there. Once the kid finished with his task in the envelope, he ran to the back of the line and the next kid ran up and got his envelope. They first tied the camp counselor to their chairs with a rope. Then they blindfolded each one, then they fed them different food items...chocolate, bananas, etc and the first team to get finished with all their directions in the envelope was the winner. Strength won. It was funny to watch. One counselor said "I want to thank whoever it was that poured that chocolate down the front of my blouse." I overheard one say "That was gross" and I'm not sure what it was that went into his mouth at that point. Anyway, we had a good time and are in the town of Woodland Washington this evening. Nighty night. WLY m and d, gpa, and gma, ggpa and ggma.

Sunday August 2, 2009

Today after breakfast at the motel we headed out of town and drove around Lake Samish. There are many homes right on the lake and not a lot of public areas to stop at, but we took a couple of pictures and headed on south. We called Len and Shirley around 1 p.m. and Len came and got us when we got into Renton as their home is difficult to find when you don't know where you're going. We had a nice visit with them and Cindy was there helping clean house and take care of the yard. She looks wonderful!!! Everything in Washington is brown due to the heat wave....I have never seen it so brown....it looks like California beginning in May and the rest of the summer. It was hot there as well...about 93 when we left at 5 p.m. Cindy lead us out to highway 5 and we proceeded south and took off toward the east and down highway 7. Stopped at an Arby's for dinner and are now at the motel in the town of Morton. En route we stopped and took a picture of this cute little "1906 Evangelical Lutheran Kirche." It was so cute. I would have liked to go inside and see what it looked like. They have breakfast here at the motel as well up until 10:30 a.m., so we don't have to leap out of bed in a hurry to get there. Today is cousin Judys birthday and we called her and left a message, but she must have been out celebrating. Good for her! You know that if you click on the pictures in this blog they get bigger and you can see the scenery better.
We love you all, m and d, gpa and gma, ggpa and ggma.

Saturday August 1, 2009

Talked to Kimmy Ann this morning as she was driving over to Dixon to Paula's funeral. I'm sad that we could not be there, but life isn't always fair. Dennis and Roger know I was there in spirit, and Kimmy was there for them too. The wedding went well. It was in someone's back yard out by a pond across the street from the farm. Lots of people came, but none of Gene's kids or Nellie. Cousin Margaret was there, so dad had a good time visiting with her. Nancy's husband did not come as he had company from out of state. The bride and groom were radiant. The Matron of Honor looks just like the bride, but they are just good friends, not relatives. The food was great, after we ate, they had a few dances and Tammy and Shelia sang for their brother and new sister and then we left and went to Mass at Asumption Church. Here are some photos. We stopped at Wendy's after Mass and I had chili and dad had a milkshake. We stopped at the cemetery on the way back to the motel. We're now back at the motel watching tv.
