Tuesday July 21, 2009

We started out the morning by stopping at Mount Terry Fox en route to Jasper. The first photo is the plaque dedicating the mountain to this courageous young man, who lost a leg to cancer at age 18 and then proceeded to walk across Canada and raised $24 million for cancer research before dying in 1981 at the age of 21. We who were alive then, probably all remember this and the plaque brought tears. Then we went into Jasper, stopped along the way at Athabasca Falls and here they are, very beautiful! Still not Niagara though! Along the way we stopped at a rest stop and watched the river rafters go by...Ed is sitting in the lawn chair at the site. We drove through Jasper, but no elk this time and afterwards found a herd of mountain goats grazing alongside the highway.....many people had stopped to observe these lovely creatures and their new babies. Then we came across another bunch of people observing a black bear, but alas! by the time we got out of the car and across the road, he had headed for tall timbers. Too many people looking I guess. We had dinner at Lake Louise at a "Family Restaurant." Well, we went up the elevator and went inside, a busy place, run by Asian people. Ed ordered a chicken salad sandwich and I ordered a chicken breast sandwich. When it came, I ate it, but told Ed that it neither resembled nor tasted like any chicken I'd ever had before. I have no idea what it was, but the meal cost $27 and I was still hungry. So, my advice to you is that when you come to Canada, you stick with A&W or Burger King. At least you know what you're getting to eat and there is enough of it. Amen today.
